A muffler is a device used to reduce the noise emitted by the exhaust gas of an internal combustion engine. The muffler is installed in the exhaust system of most engines. The muffler is designed as an acoustic device that reduces the loudness of the sound pressure generated by the engine through acoustic silence.
An unavoidable side effect of this noise reduction is that exhaust gas flow is restricted, which creates back pressure, which reduces engine efficiency. This is because the engine exhaust must share the same complex outlet channel as the sound pressure that the muffler is designed to reduce, which is built into the muffler.

Some aftermarket mufflers claim to increase engine output and/or reduce fuel consumption by slightly reducing backpressure. This usually requires less noise reduction (ie, more noise).
